BIOGRAPHY

Brigitte Wawoe-Ziegler (1939–2025) was born in Heidelberg, Germany. She lived in Curaçao from 1967 to 1978, then spent two years in London, where she completed postgraduate courses at Morley College. In 1980, she moved to the Netherlands, while continuing to return regularly to Curaçao for exhibitions and to work in her studio in the quarry at Nieuwpoort. Primarily a sculptor, she also painted and drew sustained inspiration from Curaçao’s natural landscape, particularly the Tafelberg.
Working intuitively, Wawoe-Ziegler focused on form, material, and balance. Her paintings combine color and forms in compositions ranging from animal figures to abstraction. In her sculptures, she allowed each stone to suggest its own latent form, sometimes retaining rough natural surfaces or incorporating iron elements. Her predominantly abstract work invites viewers to look closely and discover an essence rather than recognize a literal natural form. Through stone, wood, and metal, she explored mass, volume, texture, negative space, and line to create a new visual reality.
