BIOGRAPHY

Sylvia Waterloo (born 1961, Aruba) is an Aruban visual artist and art teacher. She moved to the Netherlands as a teenager and graduated from the Academy of Art in Haarlem in 2014. She has returned frequently to Aruba and also considers Curaçao one of her homes. Working across painting, drawing, collage, charcoal, and mixed media, Waterloo draws inspiration from Caribbean islands, local architecture, and the world around her. Her colourful paintings and black-and-white political sketches explore themes including power, suppression, revolt, death, life, and hope. Her work often tells a story, moving between Caribbean colour and culture and critical reflections on social and political realities.
