BIOGRAPHY

Ashley Jules Mauricia is a Curaçao-based visual and installation artist, social activist, and arts educator. His practice reflects a strong commitment to truth, freedom of expression, cultural identity, and the protection of Curaçao’s natural environment. He documents the impact of large-scale construction on the island’s landscape and uses art to raise public awareness. In earlier years, he began wearing dreadlocks and became known as “Hollywood.”

Mauricia is especially known for his coral figures, a group of sculptures assembled without glue and displayed in front of his studio at the Waterfort, also known as the Boogjes. Since 2004, one of the studio’s chambers has housed a major installation conceived as a personal universe of suspended objects and symbols.

Alongside his artistic practice, Mauricia has worked as a teacher at Akademia di Arte and manages E-Studio di Arte in Punda, where he offers workshops and artist residencies. Through his former TeleCuraçao program Arte Pa Tur, he encouraged wider public engagement with art. In 2013, he organized a community-based project involving a two-kilometer-long painting. He also donated works to Salon di Piar, including portraits of Manuel Piar and María Isabel Gómez and symbolic representations of Curaçao’s salt pans.
