BIOGRAPHY

José Maria Capricorne is a Curaçaoan visual artist and designer. He attended the technical school established by the Shell oil company in Curaçao and worked as a ceramic painter at the First Curaçao Pottery Factory. After working in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1950s, he moved to the Netherlands in 1954. Following military service, he worked as an advertising designer and trained as an urban-planning draughtsman, including a practical year with the Municipal Planning Department in Amersfoort. Inspired by the CoBrA movement, he increasingly developed independent artistic practice. In 1968, he returned to Curaçao and worked for the Public Works Department. He later founded Akademia di Arte, the Curaçao Academy of Fine Arts, together with Eddy Ayubi, and served as its director from 1971 to 1988. Since the end of the 1980s, he had developed an extensive body of work.
